Maggie’s Kitchen Memo: Champagne, Oysters, Recipes and Restaurants

Happy Monday,

Before we get back to the grind, let’s remember that it will feel so good to spend a couple of hours in the kitchen sometime this week. To help, here’s a quick look into my small batch world:

Recipes to try: There are too many amazing recipes popping up here and there, and here are the ones at the top of my give-it-a-go list: Harissa Ravioli with Broccolini (buy or make your own Harissa); Digestive Biscuits; White Bean Puree with Radicchio and Red Onions; Pumpkin Ricotta Gnocchi; and Grape and Ginger Jam. I hope to have a brief interlude with butter, sage and this old Eat Boutique recipe for Sweet Potato Gnocchi.

More Fall cookbooks: I feel blessed by the cookbook abundance this fall. Some are new or just new to me, but you bet I’m loving Maggie’s Kitchen (by Maggie Beer from Australia); The Kitchn Cookbook; An Unlikely Vineyard (from my dear old friend); and A Kitchen in France. From Mimi Thorsisson’s cookbook, I plan to pretend I’m in a French farmhouse by making her Chou Farci, a dish that layers cabbage leaves with ground meat and bakes it similar to a lasagne. I’m swimming in cabbage right now and plan to use some spicy pork from our meat share at our local farm.

Eat Boutique in the news: I feel like a proud momma when I see Eat Boutique in the news, buying up all the magazines, keeping them near my bed or handing them out to whoever will take a copy. Northshore Magazine ran a feature on the evolution of my small batch food business, showcasing images taken by my photographer-in-food Heidi Murphy/White Loft Studio. Pumpkin is better savory: Last week, we photographed two stories for Style Me Pretty Living as well as my Roasted Pumpkin Enchiladas for the blog, and then Heidi, Kate and I gobbled it all down. The post with its pretty photos and detailed recipe will launch any day now — and I’ll update this post with the link when it does. It’s great made with pumpkin or squash. It also makes a double batch, so you can gift sauce to a friend or your freezer for a future meal. I know I’ve been teasing this recipe for so long, but it’s worth it.

Dining out: I ate out a lot this past week, a lot. There were many moments of good-bye to old friends and hugs to folks I hadn’t seen in a long while. No matter the venue, fancy or casual, I am resolute that the very best meal between friends consists of a dozen oysters and a glass of champagne. It feels indulgent but it’s really so good for you, the oysters are fortifying in a way that boosts your spirits, no matter the occasion. I had this combo at my two favorite Boston seafood restaurants: Row 34 and Neptune Oyster. Add both to your Boston travel wish list. I keep my travel wish lists on Pinterest, in case you need a spot for yours. I have wish lists for New York, Brooklyn, Berlin, Paris, Ireland and a board that covers all the other dreamy places I want to visit.

Sage champagne: If you’re not quite sure what to do with the last bunches of sage in your garden, my advice is two-fold. (1) Give it all to me. I’ll hang it from my kitchen and dry until crispy. I store it in jars, using it up all season, and gift tiny sage jars to friends who love to cook savory meals. (2) Put it in champagne. It make so much sense – the warming, herbal aroma drifts around the glass as you sip. It’s the quickest cocktail, for sure.
